Alice Knight Memorial Trail

I’ve been to Coonskin Park numerous times over the past four years, but somehow, I never knew the Alice Knight Memorial Trail existed. Maybe it’s one of those local gems that hides in plain sight, just sitting there and waiting to be discovered. Yesterday, I finally found it, and I’m glad I did.

Just a short 15-minute drive from downtown Charleston, Coonskin Park is a nice spot for picnics, family events, and fishing. But this trail adds something different, it’s a wonderful woodland escape right here in the Kanawha Valley. To find it, enter the park and follow the main road until you reach the entrance to the Upper Park on the left. There’s a small gravel parking area there. Park your car, cross the road, and you’ll spot the trail sign right in front of you.

Trail Highlights – A Walk Through the Woods

The Alice Knight Memorial Trail is perfect if you’re looking for an easy and peaceful nature walk without traveling far. Here’s what to expect:

  • Trail Length: About 2 miles round-trip depending on how far you explore
  • Difficulty: Easy to moderate—gentle hills with a few slightly steeper sections
  • Trail Surface: Dirt path with roots and rocks here and there
  • Scenery: Forested path, streams, wooden bridges, and occasional wildlife sightings

The trail winds through thick hardwood forest and follows parts of a small creek. Wooden footbridges make the walk more scenic, and there are plenty of places to stop, take photos, or just listen to the sounds of nature, water and birds.

Why It’s Worth the Trip

What I liked most about the Alice Knight Memorial Trail is its quiet beauty. It isn’t crowded, and I only got to see 2 other hikers throughout the whole journey. It feels unreal, like a trail built for people who genuinely love being outside. The shade makes it perfect for summer walks, and I was lucky to walk the full trail in the fall, surrounded by leaves glowing in shades of yellow and deep red in some areas.

It’s also a trail that works for everyone, whether you’re getting into hiking for the first time or just need a relaxing walk to clear your mind after a long day.
