Long Point Trail

I didn’t get into hiking seriously until I returned from the Camino de Santiago about three months ago. Since then, I’ve been exploring local trails, and one of my recent discoveries is the Long Point Trail near Fayetteville.

This trail is situated within the beautiful New River Gorge National Park and offers some of the most iconic views in the area. The trailhead has a small parking lot, making it easy to access, and the path leads you through a mix of rich forests before opening up to breathtaking overlooks of the New River Gorge and the famous New River Gorge Bridge.

Trail Highlights – A Hike in Layers

The Long Point Trail is short but rewarding, with opportunities for both easy strolls and more adventurous exploration:

  • The Main Path (1.6 mi one-way – Red markers): A moderate out-and-back trail with mostly level terrain that gradually descends toward the overlook. Perfect for a morning hike or a relaxed run.
  • Rocky Overlook (0.2 mi – Steeper section at the end): The final stretch is a bit steeper, but the payoff is worth it, a panoramic view of the gorge that’s perfect for photos or simply taking in the scenery.

Altogether, the trail offers about 3.2 miles round-trip, making it manageable in a couple of hours while still giving you a full nature experience.

Why It Feels Special

What makes the Long Point Trail truly special is the combination of forest and gorge views. The hardwood forests, blooming rhododendrons, and rocky outcrops make it feel like a hidden gem in the heart of West Virginia. Standing at the overlook, with the New River Bridge in sight and the gorge below, you feel connected to both the natural and historic beauty of the area.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Trailhead and parking are near Newton Road in Fayetteville; the lot can fill up quickly on weekends.
  • Surfaces are natural dirt with some rocky patches; sturdy shoes are recommended.
  • Pets are welcome but must be leashed.
  • The trail is open for hiking; cyclists are allowed except on the last 0.2-mile overlook section.
  • Watch your step near cliff edges – the views are incredible but the drop-offs are steep.

A Scenic Escape Close to Town

For me, the Long Point Trail is perfect because it doesn’t require a long drive to get away from Charleston. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful walk, a short trail run, or a place to take the family for fresh air and beautiful views, it delivers.

Next time you want to escape for a bit, lace up your hiking shoes and head to Fayetteville. The Long Point Trail is waiting, and it’s a chance to see one of West Virginia’s most stunning views up close.
